Today is the National Day of Silence. This is my third year participating in this event. I will not be speaking from 8 am until 5 pm today. Here's why:

Please understand my reason for not speaking today. I support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. People who are silent today believe that laws and attitudes should be inclusive of people of all sexual orientations. The Day of Silence is to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred, oppression and prejudice. Think about the voices you are not hearing. What can you do to end the silence?

I know not everyone can do this. But if you feel so inclined, let people know that this is going on. It's a major event that I am very proud to be a part of.

~Susan

ETA: LJ doesn't think transgender is a word. That makes me very unhappy.

I think a lot of progress has been made in some geographic areas. I work in a university and am part of a Canada-wide organization for counselors & educators in universities and colleges. I noticed that the national meeting this year has a rather large event to draw awareness to the "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community." There are lots of programs on our campus to support acceptance. And gay marriage is legal in my province. For the most part I am pleased with my community.

Hooray for GSA *puts on his spiffy sticker and beeded bracelet for the DoS*

Yes. I am totally one of the organizers for the event at my school this year.

Good to see you still are doing it Sussie!

Wow, that's very cool, Susan. *hugs her a lot* I have to talk - a LOT - for work. But I wish I could join you. That's an extremely meaningful, worthwhile thing to do.

LJ might be a bit behind the times in its dictionary updates? That's all I can figure.

Oh, and I hope aren't the first to discover a fire today! ;) *imagines Susan gesturing and pointing and hopping up and down, but no one else seeing the flames shooting out of a building* Yep, I'm a baaad girl. Spank me. ;)

*moves to Canada*

A lot of progress has been made, but there is still a long way to go. Especially here in the States. We suck down here.

Yay!

I have to break the silence for a presentation, but other than that, I'm gold.

Good on ya!

A lot of people on campus have to talk, but are wearing black as a sign of support.

I'm very glad to say that we are allowed to speak in case of an emergency! That would be awful! Also... sign language is allowed. Knowing sign can be very very handy.

*spanks you the way you like*

Well I'd done it before in high school, but the event is put on by our campus gay straight alliance. You can find out more information about DoS at www.dayofsilence.org

It's been well worth my time and energy each year.

Squees! The only sign language I know is "I love you." I like to collect that phrase in as many languages as I can. :)

Te amo.

Amen.

But LJ doesn't think a lot of things are words. *kicks it anyway*

*huggles you*

I have to be quiet while they talk about femminist theory in class today! mother. fuck.

Love love

*GLOMP*

I had to talk some. Stupid language class. I also had to talk to advisor type peoples. They want me to submit a junior plan and choose a major. *sigh* And really...I'm silent enough. I don't think I should be encouraged to do so. *dons rainbow bracelet* Bring it on, bitchezz.

Ah yes..The Sign Language was awesome. Hooray for knowing the abc's and a few other key terms (mostly from Gibbs, mostly dirty ;))

Yeah..we wore black (the t-shirt idea flopped), had stickers we made, and we made rainbowish beeded bracelets. Yes, it was fun.

I didn't participate. Why? So I could defend the people who are participating from certain people who take it upon themselves to harass them. To show what kind of people I'm talking about, read Hannah's latest entry.

Ah, fuck.

Did anything come of it? It takes so much energy to hate. I don't understand how people can keep it up for that long.

God. Doesn't. Hate.

Lordy! People should read their own book.
