I still have a bunch of the books I was read as a very small child. Short picture books and the like. Not too long ago I was going through them and realized nearly all of my favorites had the same theme: going into the dark/night and finding out it's not so bad or at least growing from the experience.

In terms of imagery it is all very womb like. I also had pretty good taste for a carpet sloth. The stories hold up when I reread them now. In particular Buttermilk by Stephan Cosgrove.

This was my favorite book as a youngster. If you ever find yourself needing a picture book for yourself or others, I highly recommend this one.

You inspired me to find a copy of my old favorite children's book, "Miss Suzy." It's a book about a grey squirrel who has a nest in the top of a very tall oak tree. She takes very good care of her home, and loves to fall asleep looking up at the stars at night. But some mean squirrels come and kick her out of the nest and break all her possessions, so she hides in the attic of a nearby house. Sounds melodramatic, but it has a very happy ending.

Anyhow, I'd given up on finding that book, because the last time I looked, it was out of print. Today though, I find that they've re-issued a 40th anniversary edition of it, which looks JUST like my old copy, so I'm getting one.

Thanks for the inspiration! :D *is happy*
